Born August 11, 1916, in Abingdon, VA, she was the daughter of the late Dr. William Wallace McChesney and Ottolene Reams Morrissette McChesney. Mrs. McKnight attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Smithdeal Massey Business College in Richmond, VA.

She formerly worked as secretary for the Maryland Casualty Company. She had also worked for Mooresville Mills and Draymore Manufacturing married Company. James Mrs. Earl "Bub" McKnight on July 26, 1940. She was former President of the Mooresville Junior Civic League, Mooresville Women's Club and Lowrance Hospital Auxillary.

Mrs. McKnight served as Chairman of the South Iredell County Red Cross. She was Vacation Bible School Director of the Mooresville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church for 8 years. She also served as Chairman of the Christian Board of Education. Mrs.

McKnight was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl McKnight, owner of McKnight Pontiac-Buick. She is survived by her son, James E. "Jimmy" McKnight, Jr. and wife, Gail, of Davidson; granddaughter, Ashley McKnight; stepgrandchildren, Angela Lewis and Lee Hoke; and step-great grandchildren, Austin and Whitney Lewis, and Ashley Hoke. A memorial service will be held at 4 PM Friday, July 7, 2006, at the Mooresville ARP Church, with Rev.

Lucy Boyd Mead WARRENTON Mrs. Meade, 97, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006 in Chapel Hill, NC. She was born in Warrenton, NC, the daughter of William Norwood and Elizabeth Burwell Boyd. She is preceded in death by her brother, Henry Armistead Boyd, and her sister, Mariam Norwood Boyd Orgain. She was educated at RandolphMacon Woman's College and received her Masters at Emory University in Atlanta.

In addition, she studied music in New York. Lucy was a member of the Chapel of the Cross Church in Chapel Hill and Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in Warrenton. a member of the National Societies Colonial Dames and past president the Hillside Garden Club, a part of the Garden Club of Virginia. Lucy was married to Dr. Robert Douthat Meade, who was a historian, author and Chairman Emeritus of the department of history at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA.

He was best known for his two-volume biography, "Patrick Henry Patriot in the Dr. Meade also wrote, "Judah P. Benjamin: Confederate for which he received the 1943 Southern Author's Award for the most distinguished work on a Southern subject. Surviving are daughter, Lucy Meade Turner of Cornelius, NC; two grandsons, Frank Rogers Vaden, Decatur, GA and Meade Middleton of Raleigh, NC; three st Marc William Turner, Michael David Turner and Christopher Brian Turner; two great grandchildren, Morgan Boyd Vaden and Jackson Carter Vaden; and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Boyd Thorne of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services will be held at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Warrenton at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 7, with interment in Fairview Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Carol Woods in Chapel Hill, NC a at a later date. An South Carolina Martha Brown Roberts CHERAW Mrs. Roberts, age 72, died at her home July 3, 2006. Born in Marlboro County she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Betty Boone Brown. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family. Surviving are her sons Joseph M.

Presnell, Jr. of Detroit, MI; Thomas T. Presnell, James Michael Presnell; and Carl David Presnell all of Cheraw. Her daughters Delores Kay Driggers of Coward, SC; Golda Fay Hall and Sarah Elizabeth Underwood, both of Cheraw. 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Charles Roberts and her son Glenn Ray Presnell. Smith, 84, of Alpharetta, GA, formerly of Charlotte, NC, died July 3, 2006 at his home. He was born on July 30, 1921 in Portland, Indiana, a son of the late Homer and Gertrude Metz Smith. Ray World served his country proudly in War II as a Pilot Instructor. He went on to make this his career, retiring as a Pilot Examiner with the FAA. He also had retired from a long association with the Air Force Reserves.

While in Charlotte, he had been a member of Carmel Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ann Smith, and children, Lynn Riggins and husband, Mark, of Atlanta, GA, M. Smith, Jr. and wife, Teresa, of Vidalia, GA, and Karen Lawhorn and husband, Ed, of Blacksburg, VA, and five grandchildren and six great Funeral services will be held at 2 on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Pineville Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service, 10500 Park Charlotte. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2006 at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel with Reverend Bruce Petty officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr.

Whitenight was born July 10, as 1920 in Columbia County, PA, a son of the late William and Carrie Lily Hess Whitenight. In addition to his parents, his beloved wife, Carrie Beatrice Whitenight and his son, Darcy G. Whitenight, preceded in death. Mr. Whitenight will be remembered as a loving husband and father who cared deeply for his family.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps having served his country during W.W. II. Mr. Whitenight retired from IBM, was a member of Idlewild Christian Church in Charlotte and formerly served as a scout leader in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Whitenight is survived by three sons, Gary L. Whitenight of Greensburg, PA, Barry G. Whitenight of Belmont, NC, and David W. Whitenight of Charlotte, NC; daughter-in-law, Geraldine Whitenight of Matthews, NC; children, Michelle Levine '(Steve), Christopher Whitenight (Kathy), Jeffrey Whitenight (Nicole), Megan 1 Martinez, Darcy Whitenight, Carrie Whitenight, and Jenny Whitenight; great grandchildren, Patrick Whitenight, Tristan Whitenight, Kassidy Whitenight, Jeffrey Alex Whitenight, Brenden Martinez, Julia Martinez, and Christian Martinez.

Dr. Raymond Carroll Hayes BOONE Dr. Hayes, 78, of of Wingate, died Sunday night. He was born March 4, 1928 in Watauga County. He then taught English for eight years in North Carolina Public Schools, and was an Associate Professor of English for twenty eight years at Wingate University.

He was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus status from Wingate University in 2001. He retired in 1993. He was a United States Air Force veteran, serving in Okinawa. Survivors include his wife, Lois Teague Hayes of the home; three daughters, Cherry Hayes Johnson and husband, J. of Amy Hayes Singleton of Simpsonville, SC, and Martha Hayes Thomason and husband, Jason, of Apex; one son, Alan Hayes and wife, Lynn, of Valle Crucis; four sisters, Josephine Herman of Adrian, MI, Nina' Banner of Sugar Grove, Carolyn Farthing and husband, Cecil, and Clara Baird, all of Boone; three brothers, Dwight Hayes and wife, Dixie Mae, Tom Hayes and wife, Grace, all of Vilas, and Dale Hayes and wife, Betty, of Boone; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, July 8, 2006, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Boone. The body will lie in state from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the church.
