I tried to convince my family that instead of our traditional red and white Christmas decorations, we should try an all white winter wonderland theme.
And as you could’ve guessed, this went over like a lead balloon.
You should’ve seen the looks on their faces too, as I mentioned “all neutral and white” their faces puckered up like they’d just sucked on a lemon.
They quickly protested but I’m not sure what the big deal is, I mean It’s not like I was trying to stuff their stockings with algebra books.
Apparently there is an unwritten rule that says “Mom shalt not mess with the family’s traditional Christmas decorations.”
Am I the only one that didn’t know this?
Yep, its a thing. So to avoid having a Christmas coup on my hands, I agreed to go around the corner to our casual dining space and dream of my snowy winter wonderland there.
Holiday Winter Dining Room Décor…
In my little dream I prettied up $4 wreaths by flocking them and hanging them in my windows as if we lived in one of those extravagant houses instead of one with athletic socks trickling down the staircase.
And I added the cutest little greenery then tied it to my chairs with a pretty green plaid ribbon.
The chair decoration is perfect for the imaginary dinner party I plan on throwing. And my nay saying teenagers aren’t invited either!
Oh wait they’d probably like that. I take it back. It’s now a mandatory fancy family dinner and their presence is required.
What is also required is, all kids must be fully dressed. (I know that sounds obvious but you’d be surprised on some of the little details teenage boys like to overlook…like pants.)
The dinner will be so fancy we’ll have to drink with our pinkies up and only use the fanciest of words.
My kids will say things like, “Oh, Mother I hope you don’t mind indulging us while we bloviate about your decorating prowess, it’s just that were so honored to be your children.”.
Okay, that may be taking things a little too far, but they will be wearing pants.
On second thought, lets skip the fantasy and pretentious dinner. I’m more of a take out kind of girl anyway.
Snowy Winter Tablescape & Flocked Wreaths
Silliness aside, the room was easy to put together. I purchased many of the tablescape linens from Target’s Hearth &Hand with Magnolia line and the mini flocked trees were from Target’s dollar spot.
They were green when I purchase them and I flocked them when I did the window wreaths.
To flock the wreaths, I ordered a box of flocking powder off Amazon. (Sno-Flock Flocking Powder Affiliate link) The directions are fairly simple, you mist your greenery with water and then dust on the powder.

I did not flock the Christmas tree. I ordered the flocked Christmas tree from King of Christmas Trees and I’m super happy with how full and pretty it is.
Quick & Easy Winter Décor
I have to admit the room is missing something, curtains. They are half sewn and siting the other room waiting to be finished. Without the curtains I had a empty spot on the wall next to the window. To fill the spot I took a branch of fresh greenery left over from a live Christmas tree and hung it on the wall. The branch was free and it only took 2 seconds to hang. How about that for a quick filler?
Another quickie was adding this little poinsettia to a trifle bowl I had sitting in the kitchen. It’s an easy way to dress up one of those inexpensive poinsettias that come in the cheap plastic pots. I think I will write out better instructions in a post next week.
Also, next week I’ll share how I passed on the $70 tree collar and made my own with a $25 basket. You can see the transformed tree collar in the Christmas tree photo above.
I am super happy with how it turned out and the family seems to like it too. Well mostly anyway.
After I spent two days flocking, pulling the space together and taking photos, my oldest says “It’s nice but I think you should take down the Egret (keep in mind, I just painted him) and paint a new painting tonight. A snowy owl would be nicer.” But wait it gets better,my mom who is with us chimes in with “ohhhhhh yeah that’s a great idea James! A new winter painting would be good here. You should go do that Jen.” and then the two of them begin discussing snowy owls and all the possibilities. Me, I’m standing there shaking my head wondering how I am related to these two.
I’m kidding, I love them. But I’m not painting a snowy owl. Well at least not this week.
