Joe was born on September 9, 1922 in Lower L'Ardoise, Richmond Co., Cape Breton. He was the eldest son of the late Anthony and Clara (Sampson) Mombourquette, whom he dearly adored and honoured all the days of his life. He grew up in the small fishing community of L'Ardoise and began full-time work at the age of 13. Although only 17, he joined the Canadian Army in Halifax in 1940, as a member of the Princess Louise Fusiliers Regiment (PLF). The PLF saw action in Italy and Holland from late 1943 until May 1945, ending the war after freeing the coastal town of Dalfziel, Holland. His younger brother, Frank, died in action in Dalfziel on May 1, 1945, as a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders. At war's end Joe had earned the rank of Sergeant and remained with the PLF until 1947, when he returned to school at College Ste. Anne in Church Point. Upon graduation, he entered St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, graduating with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. During his years at St. F.X. Joe participated in every aspect of university life, including student government, the Co-op Society, Reserve Officer Training, the Varsity track and field team, intramural sports and the school's religious activities. Joe was student council president in his senior year and was elected Life President of the St. F.X. Class of 52'. With his good friend, Frank "Fa Fa" MacNeil, he was co-recipient of the prestigious Larkin Trophy, awarded to students with the best all around commitment to academics, athletics, campus and religious life. He remained a dedicated alumnus and passionate supporter of St. F.X. and its sports teams, faithfully attending his five year reunions and keeping in touch with his fellow alumni. After graduating from St. F.X., Joe rejoined the Canadian Army as an officer and immediately began training to join the Canadian Forces, then fighting in the Korean War. Before going overseas, he married the love of his life, Theresa Marion Clannon, to whom he remained faithful and devoted during the 55 years of their marriage. Joe was in Korea from late 1952 until early 1954, when he returned to Canada and met his first child, Colin, who had been born while he was away. During Joe's time in the military, he and Theresa were stationed in Petawawa, Ont.; Chatham, N.B. (where Peter and Kevin were born), Oromocto (where Michael and David were born), Montreal (where Maureen was born), finally returning to Oromocto in 1964. Joe retired from the military in 1973 with the rank of Captain, having served for many years as the Base Personnel Selection Officer. He moved with his family to Burton, N.B., where he and Theresa continued to live among wonderful friends and neighbours. Joe began a new career in 1973, as the manager of the Manpower office in Minto, N.B., where he made many new friends. He eventually transferred to the Fredericton Manpower office and was assigned responsibility for Project Second Career at C.F.B. Gagetown, assisting retiring soldiers find civilian work. A long-time supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party, Joe finally answered the call to political life in 1982 and was elected MLA for Oromocto-Burton-Geary. He was appointed to the Provincial Cabinet as Minister of Labour in 1982 and in 1985 was appointed to the Executive Committee of Cabinet. He did his best to serve his constituents with honour, ability and integrity, fulfilling the pledge he made during his first campaign. Following the 1987 election, Joe remained active in the Oromocto area community, continuing a life of service he had begun during the 1950's. During his almost 50 years in the area, Joe served on the School Board, was a member of the Oromocto Lions Club and then the Burton Lions Club, was actively involved with the First Oromocto Scout troop, was an organizer for the Oromocto Winter Carnival, was the Master of Ceremonies for the Oromocto Pioneer Days for more than 10 years, was on the founding Board of Directors of the Oromocto VON, was a frequent canvasser for the Heart Foundation and Cancer Society, and generally pitched in whenever anyone asked for his assistance or the use of his commanding voice. He was proud of his military service and loyal to his comrades, honouring their service through his participation in Branch No. 93 (Oromocto) Royal Canadian Legion, the RCR Association, the Korean Veterans Association, the Federal Superannuates National Association (FSNA) and by regularly attending reunions of his wartime regiment, the PLF. An avid sportsman and conservationist, Joe was president of the C.F.B. Gagetown Fish and Game Club in the 1960s and for many years was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting and especially fishing, spending many days during his retirement years on the water with his buddies and his son, Peter. In his earlier years in Oromocto, Joe enjoyed playing hockey and golf, and was a competitive curler and bowler. A faithful servant of his God and Saviour, Joe was a dedicated member of St. Mary's Parish at C.F.B. Gagetown and then St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Oromocto. He was a member of the Parish Council at St. Mary's and became its first Eucharistic Minister. At St. Vincent de Paul he was again involved in the parish council, serving several years as president of the Council. He was also an usher, reader and Eucharistic Minister, and a 4th degree member of the Donald Clattenburg Assembly 1991 (Oromocto) Knights of Columbus and the Msgr. Boyd Council 6774 Knights of Columbus. In later years he was an auxilliary member of the Legion of Mary and a member of the Cursillo Community. After this remarkable life of accomplishment and service to his church, community, friends and family, Joe has entered eternity to reunite with his family and friends who have gone before him. He will be deeply missed by Theresa, his loving wife, companion and soul mate of 55 years; his children, Colin (Arlene Pyke), Peter, Kevin (Jean Campbell), Michael (Beverly Edwards), David (Deborah Fraser), and Maureen (Dale Cook); his grandchildren, Steven, Alex, Neil, Nicole, Patrick, Mandy, Emily, Gabrielle, Spencer, Hailey, and William; his great-grandchildren, Rachael, Alexander Joseph, and Caylene; his brothers, Danny (Anna), Walter (Nora May), and Freddie (Margaret), and his sister, Sister Rosemary, f.j.; his goddaughters, Marie (Clannon) Mombourquette and Barbara Ireland, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours. Theresa was the wife of the late Burt McNeil (of Upper Granville) who died suddenly in 1973. She was born in Lower L'Ardoise, a daughter of Emmanuel Mombourquette and Sarah "Sissy" McGrath. A daughter of Cape Breton, she was proud of her roots, however, she called the Annapolis Valley "home". In 1977, Theresa became high sheriff of Annapolis County, the first woman in Canada to hold this position, a fact which led her to be a surprise guest on Front Page Challenge. In 2005, Theresa was honoured to be inducted into the Order of Nova Scotia. She was a tireless volunteer for numerous local and provincial charities including Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Arthritis and Alzheimer's societies. Of her many accomplishments, Theresa was most proud of her role as mother to her 17 children and "Nanny" to her 40 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. MacLEAN, Laura Jean - 77, L’Ardoise. Our beloved mother Laura MacLean, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. She was born Laura Jean Hendrican on January 24, 1933, in Pictou. Her parents were Dan 'Deke' and Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Hendrican. Laura was predeceased by brothers, Ernie (Pictou); Leo (Windsor, Ont.); Bill (Ottawa); Peter (Windsor, Ont.) and John, in infancy (Pictou); as well as sisters, Dorothy Mingo (Truro); Olive Parson (Truro); and daughter, Helen Elizabeth (L’Ardoise). She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, John 'Jack' MacLean and children, Sandy Joseph (Maribeth), Halifax; Danny (Charlene), St. Peters; Valerie Pottie (Nicky), L’Ardoise; Cecilia (Eric), L’Ardoise; Johnny (Charlene), Yarmouth; sisters, Marion Mingo, Truro; Patricia Wallace, Truro; brother, Thomas Anthony, Ottawa. Our beloved mother was a doting and devoted grandmother to Errin Johnson (George), Matthew, Brandon, Eoin, Jamie and great-grandchildren, Bailey and Devin Johnson. Our mother was born during the Great Depression and came from a large family of nine children. Despite growing up with little material possessions, our mother had the gift of humour and anyone who came into contact with her liked her instantly. She loved to laugh and was quick witted and saw the humour in the bleakest of situations. Our mother worked very hard to raise six children and very often did without and despite going through times of great physical pain, never complained. Her children constantly felt the warmth of her unconditional love and because of her kindness, humour and laughter; she was loved by many who were fortunate to know her. Our mother adored her grandchildren and from a very young age she tended and took loving care of them. To her grandchildren she was 'Nanny' and this extended to the children of very close family friends. As a young woman our mother loved to dance and our father claims that it was through dancing that they first met. Our beloved mother has joined her daughter and our sister Helen in heaven. It is said that time heals all wounds, but none of us who were blessed to have our mother in our lives will forget her. She is in our hearts forever and shall never leave. Until the end of our days we shall miss our mother and carry memories of happiness, laughter and joy. We miss you mum, now, always and forever. Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 10, at 2 p.m. in Holy Guardian Angel Roman Catholic Church, L’Ardoise with Father Mariadoss Lourdusamy officiating. Church will be open earlier for prayers and condolences. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made in memory of Laura to Strait Richmond Palliative Care Unit or William B. MARTELL, Walter Michael - Passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the age of 92. Born in L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, on October 16, 1918, he was a son of the late Annie (Briand) and Sylvester Martell. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941 and served in Europe until his discharge in 1946. He worked for the Department of National Defence at CFB Halifax, Stadacona, for 29 years before his retirement in 1983. Walter loved simple pleasures, like playing cards, fishing with his grandsons, and walking in the woods. He loved working with his hands, spending many hours at his work bench, with an eager young son watching and listening, a cherished time that was never forgotten, and was instrumental in shaping a young boy’s own love of tools and the trades, and his future career. He was truly one of the friendliest people you could ever have the good fortune of knowing. He took all things in stride, seeming to know that life was too short to get annoyed over the minor incidents that most others seem to dwell upon. When he was once asked how he managed to always keep such a calm and cheerful demeanor his reply was simply, 'I’m at peace with the world'. What a wonderful way to live. Walter was a devout Catholic, and in his latter years he made it known that he was not afraid of passing from this world to the next. And in his death, we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace with God. He is survived by his devoted wife Edna, of 58 years, son, Michael (Darlene) Martell; daughters, Carol Martell and Diane O’Brien (Jerome); grandsons, Sean and Liam O’Brien; and step granddaughter, Sara (Young), all of Halifax. Born in West L’Ardoise, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Charles Adolphus and Annie Mae (Briand) Mombourquette. Alex was a man of action, and believed deeply in the notion that a single person could and should make a difference to the world around him. This was evident in his career, his volunteer work and his willingness to help friends and family. Alex built a 30 year career with the Co-operators and was a committed member of the co-operative movement. His career took him, Mary and family from L'Ardoise to St John's twice, Sydney, Moncton twice, Regina and Halifax, making many friends along the way. He and Mary retired in Barra Head. Alex supported his community and church and was involved in many volunteer organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, Voluntary Planning, and Co-op Council. He was named 2006 Distinguished Co-operator by the NS Co-operative Council, and was recently named Honorary President of the Progressive Conservative party of NS. His love of carpentry and woodworking shone through in projects like kitchen cabinets for his children, helping build a home for his in-laws and a cottage for his sister, crafting an altar for the church, and building his and Mary's home in Barra Head. After retirement, Alex and Mary spent many years traveling around North America visiting family and friends. When Mary's health declined, Alex devoted his life to taking care of her, so she could live out her years at home. Alex missed Mary dearly but was beginning to laugh and enjoy life again, traveling to visit his children and grandchildren, making new friends, and talking of future adventures. That’s just the way he was: a vibrant, fun-loving people person, willing to do anything for anybody. He lived life on his own terms. He was caring and compassionate. Yes, he had a heart of gold. He was an outdoorsman, a guy’s guy. For a couple of months each year, the sea was this lobster fisherman’s home. His boat was his pride and joy. Its name, Still Movin and Groovin, was so appropriate for Claude, who liked his boats fast and never let up on the throttle. Movin and Groovin was the way he lived his life. But it was the way he treated others that set this fisherman/ electrician apart. If you needed something, anything, Claude was there to help. He loved travelling and spending time on the lake, he enjoyed hunting, and he relished the time he spent on his ski-doo and side by side. Claude was 39 when he suddenly passed away while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico on January 7. He was a wonderful son, husband, brother, and friend. He was the youngest son of Lester and Carolyn, L’Ardoise, and he is survived by his soulmate and wife, Kendra (Aucoin); his brother, Blaire (Muriel), L’Ardoise; his sister, Alayne, St. Peter’s; his cherished nieces, Danielle, Meghan, Janelle, Chelsey, and Molly; his father and mother-in-law, Paul Emile and Eveline Aucoin, Cheticamp; his sister-in-law, Johanne Aucoin (Marky Hache), Cheticamp; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will also be missed by his fourlegged girl, Roxy. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why he left so soon, or why he left before we were ready to say goodbye, but little by little, we will remember not just that Claude died, but that he lived and that his life gave us memories too profound to forget. The waves will still crash into the shoreline, the sun will rise and set each day, but it won’t be quite the same around L’Ardoise without Claude and his boat - open full throttle, just the way he wanted it, just the way he wanted to live each day. Visitation will be held on Monday from 1 - 9 p.m. and a funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, in Holy Guardian Angels Parish, Father Michael Martell OSA officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home. Lester Vincent Martell
November 04, 1933 - May 04, 2020
L’Ardoise, Richmond County, Nova Scotia
It is with profound sadness that we must share that Lester Vincent Martell, 86, died peacefully at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston on May 4. Born in Rockdale, Lester was the youngest son of the late Wilfred and Nona (Langille) Martell. Lester was a longshoreman, businessman, but most importantly a fisherman. He had an immense love for the ocean and was instrumental in the establishment of Lobsters R Us Seafood. He was an avid hunter and looked forward to his yearly hunting trips with the boys. In recent years, Lester could be found either at the shore, where there was always a project waiting for him, or taking in various card games in the area. Regardless of where you crossed paths with Lester, you could rest assured that his quick wit and numerous stories would leave you with a smile on your face. In June 1966, Lester started his married life in New Jersey where he worked in construction. Two and half years later, the draw of home and family brought him back to Cape Breton where he started Martell’s Bus Service Limited and returned to fishing. He was one of the first fishermen to start fishing snow crab in Richmond County and more recently was very proud to win the federal court injunction to maintain the medical substitute operator designation for his lobster license. As with everything in his life, Lester was very passionate, determined and fought for what he believed in. He loved his family very fiercely and was always making sure they were provided for. Lester is survived by his loving wife of nearly 54 years, Carolyn; son Blaire (Muriel); daughter Alayne (Donald); granddaughters Danielle (Andy), Meghan, Janelle (Tyler), Chelsey (Logan) and Molly; great granddaughter Lilah; sister Leone Landry; daughter-in-law Kendra (Reg Sampson); and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Claude; brothers Lawrence, Johnny, Jimmie and Charlie; sisters Cora and Bessie; and great grandson Kenzie. A private family burial will take place in the coming days and a celebration of Lester’s life will take place at a later date once we are able to gather. Memorial donations can be made to the Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Health Centre. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home. Messages to the family may be conveyed at www.greensfuneralhome.ca.

Frederick James Martel
1929 - 2021
It is with great sadness that we, the family of Frederick James Martel (Age 92) announce his peaceful passing on June 17th, 2021. Born in Rockdale to George and Madge Martel on June 4th, 1929, Freddie lived a very full life with his wife Delta and their children. Freddie joined the military on January 10th, 1951 and served in Germany and Korea as a paratrooper as part of the Royal 22nd Regimen, the Van Doos. He shared many stories of his times overseas and the letters that he shared with the love of his life. Only a few years later on August 20th, 1956 he married his true love Delta (Landry) and they celebrated 61 years of marriage together before her passing in 2017. Together, Freddie and Delta had ten children: Wanda (Courtney), Jimmy (Darlene), Carolyn (James), Donna (Greg), Bonnie (Barry), Lynn (Dwain), Judy (Neil), Tina (Faron), Jamie (Debbie), and Joseph George Alexander (died in infancy). His family grew to include 21 grandchildren : Gina (Garth), Amy, Jennifer, Adam, Katelyn, Dean, Stephanie, Tanya (Dale), Dylan (Kelsey), Josh (Becky), Meaghan (Eric), Mason, Leland, Galen, Noah, Kyle, Kendall, Justin, Conor, Brett, Brayden and 12 great-grandchildren: Chase, Brandon, Seth, Carter, Ava, Tyson, Maeva, Johnelle, Emma, Luca, Precious, and Mary Rachel; sisters, Bertha Orchard, Halifax, Eva Horton, Dartmouth, Anna Doupe, St. Peter's, Beatrice Beaulieu, Rockdale; brother, Clarence, (Helen), Rockdale. Freddie loved his close knit family very much and in his own way. Besides his parents Freddie was predeceased by son-in-law Dean Samson, brother George and sisters Artemis and Bernice as well as many other extended family members. After he was honorably discharged from the military on June 10th, 1965, Freddie went to vocational school to get a trade in Carpentry and then worked at the Heavy Water Plant in Point Tupper. During those days, he traveled with Henry Breau and Harry LeBlanc. Many stories have been shared about his time there, some too crazy to mention! Freddie was a very proud and well decorated veteran and devoted countless hours to the The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 150 in Arichat serving as the president of the association for over 2 decades. He was very proud of his accomplishments at the Legion and worked hand in hand for many years with his sidekick Emily Landry. During his time as President, he was able to travel to many conventions across Canada where he was even able to sit in the speakers’ chair in the House of Commons in Ottawa. He could weasel his way into anything! Over the years, he also shared that pride by attending many Remembrance Day Ceremonies at both the Legion and many local schools with some of his veteran friends including , Ted Martins, Alcide Landry, Benny Mury and the late Ralph Roberts, just to name a few. After retiring from the Heavy Water Plant, Freddie worked for C.H. Boudreau Ambulance Service as an ambulance attendant. Many years later, he maintained his friendship with Norma, and the late Herman Boudreau. Freddie’s community involvement extended further than his work with the Legion. For many years, he served on the Board of Directors of Charles Forest Coop and played an integral part in establishing the veterans wing as a member of the board of St. Anne’s Community Centre. Taking care of veterans was certainly a passion for him. He advocated strongly for veterans and was known to make a few calls to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs where you can rest assured, he was well known. Freddie was well known in Little Anse and all over Isle Madame. To his family, he was a spry, sneaky and silly man that loved Jack Tripper and Mr. Furley, baseball and most of all a good drink of whiskey with ginger ale and a little bit of water. He enjoyed his summer trips to Grand Manan Island to visit family. Freddie loved French bread by the loaf with an endless supply of jam or cheese whiz. He could also be found on a regular basis pulling break open tickets at the Corner Bridge and bugging Beryl and the girls. Freddie was a very active man and an avid gardener. It was nothing for him to cut, load, unload and stack the wood for the winter with Delta when they were in their early 80’s. He was hard working and even managed to make some money from this hobby by selling the best quality vegetables under the business name “Isle Madame Gardens.” Later in life he enjoyed Wednesday night TV Bingo, drives out with Ma and sharing his baby picture! Freddie loved his Ford Trucks! So much so that a trip to Port Hawkesbury for toilet paper and Kleenex could result in coming home with a brand new truck on any given day. You can be sure that his negotiation with Steve Sampson was quite the show. After a heart attack in 2013, Freddie began to lose his independence. In addition, dementia stole his memory and his ability to live as he once did. When extra care became an absolute necessity, Debbie, Jamie and Donna stepped up to the plate spending countless hours supporting Freddie and honoring his wishes to remain in his home. They became his advocates and were his voice to get all the care he needed through DVA. A special thank you to all those who lent a hand in any way to give his caregivers a break when needed. The family wishes to thank Dr. MacNeil, the VON, paramedics, and the palliative care team (Dr. Cooper, Adelle Shea, Kyla MacKeigan, Leah Burns and Sarah Touesnard) for their care, attention to detail and support over the years but especially most recently. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted in long time family friends at C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home in Arichat. Due to Covid 19 gathering limits, a full military funeral will be held at a later date to honor Freddie as he deserves. Memorial donations can be made to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 150 or St. Anne’s Centre Veteran’s Wing. “Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure!"

Dad worked hard over the years - everything from forestry in Cape Breton with his uncle Harold, mining in Newfoundland with his father, to managing the Esso in St. Peters for his uncle Leonard. The remainder of his career was spent as a heavy-duty mechanic at Mac Motors in Port Hawkesbury. Beyond his work, he had a passion for the outdoors. Everything from skiing and canoeing in Cape Breton to camping and salmon fishing in Newfoundland, he loved to share his experiences with his full family. Later in life, he turned more of his attention to his community. He was especially proud of his time as Akela with the Wolf Cubs of St. Peters and the work he and Mom shared with the St. Peters and Area Food Bank. For those who knew him, he was always ready to share the latest joke that turned him red in the face with laughter; He loved finding new material online, sharing it daily. He was always eager to pull a prank on those he loved if he could pull it off without laughing. In his downtime, he enjoyed his sudoku which he always had by his side. Dad was always mindful to being the best son, dad, papa, brother, or friend he could be. There's no doubt in our minds that he was, as it showed through the love that he shared with all of us. Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass in celebration of his life will be held at Holy Guardian Angels church in L'Ardoise at a later date. If you would like to make a memorial donation in his name, Dad would have loved for any to be made to the St. Peters and Area Food Bank, or a food bank of your choice.

HENRY JAMES MARTELL - 75 YRS
January 20, 1948 – May 7, 2023 - We, the family of Henry Martell, are saddened to announce his passing on Sunday, May 7, 2023. Dad grew up in the Acadian village of L’Ardoise and was the oldest of 12 siblings. Dad began working with his father at Harris and Harris Paving Limited in Sydney at the age of 14 and continued to work there until the company closed in 2009. Henry built a home and a life for himself, his wife, and his children in East Bay. Dad was a self-taught heavy-duty mechanic by trade. He was a man with a strong can-do attitude, and many can confirm that there were no mechanical fixes out of his reach, even becoming known as the local “MacGyver”. He was sought out for his ingenuity, knowledge, and advice. Dad was the “Ultimate Recycler”. To him, his collections of lawn tractors, scrap metal, and engine parts were simply awaiting their next incarnation (much to our mother’s chagrin). In his later years, his mechanical interests gave way to woodworking projects, most notably the gifts that he created for family and friends. Henry will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Bernadette (MacLean) Martell; son, Ken (Kimberly); daughters, Giselle (Joe Troke) and Michelle; grandchildren, William (Megan) Troke, and James (Sarahlyn) Troke; great-grandchild, Remi Troke, and 11 brothers and sisters, Alex, Steve, Gerard, Elsie Deveau, Joe, Mildred Briand, Percy, Bernadette, Elizabeth Hudson, Howard, and Victor. Henry was predeceased by his parents, Ken and Evangaline (Mombourquette) Martell. Finally, the family would like to thank the staff of Homecare Cape Breton; the staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital (4C); as well as Doctor Worth and Doctor Wong for caring for Dad in his time of need. Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Henry Martell will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Friday, May 12, 2023. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Refreshments will be served following the service. Donations in memory of Henry may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
