The No. 2 seed didn't hit the first shot of the match until after midnight Saturday and had dropped the first set barely a half-hour later. But she seized control early in the second set, winning 10 straight games to open a 5-0 lead in the third. The runner-up last year in Flushing Meadows advanced to face No. 33 seed Elise Mertens on Sunday. The previous latest start to a match at the U.S. Open was exactly at midnight on Sept. 2, 1987, with Gabriela Sabatini going on to beat Beverly Bowes 6-3, 6-3.

Duke's defensive effort made it easy for Manny Diaz to enjoy his return to the sideline as a head coach. The Blue Devils beat Elon 26-3 to give Diaz a win in his debut. It was a performance fittingly fueled by a dominant defensive effort and pass rush. That was a perfect scenario considering Diaz is a longtime defensive coach who was Penn State's coordinator in the two years since he was fired as Miami's head coach. Diaz said Friday "just felt very natural" for him. Duke finished with eight sacks and 16 tackles for loss.

Instead, he finishes a year without claiming at least one major championship for the first time since 2017. Before that, it hadn't happened since 2010. The third-round exit equals Djokovic's worst showing at Flushing Meadows. Alcaraz was beaten by 74th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp on Thursday.

Emmanuel Clase's career as a closer with Cleveland began with a major blemish. It's been pristine ever since. Clase became the club's career saves leader on Friday night, notching his 150th in less than five seasons as the Guardians outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-8. The right-hander with the devastating cut fastball passed Cody Allen on Cleveland's career list. Clase has done it in hardly any time at all, and the 26-year-old only seems to be getting better. He has converted 27 straight saves chances since May 20 and is the first Cleveland pitcher to record at least 40 saves in three straight seasons. It's remarkable ascent given he was suspended for the 2020 season for testing positive for PEDs.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts immediately came out of the dugout with a trainer after Carroll's 18th homer curled just inside the right foul pole to remove the three-time NL Cy Young Award winner. The A's (59-76) hadn't had consecutive winning months since May-June 2021. Bleday broke a 1-1 tie and put the A's ahead to stay in the third with his 20th homer, lining a three-run shot that just cleared the angled wall in right-center. Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams had a 63-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and Michigan State barely beat Florida Atlantic 16-10. The Spartans were sloppy in coach Jonathan Smith's debut. It didn't go much smoother in the second half. Chiles had a chance to put the Spartans ahead by more than two touchdowns late in the third quarter, but Ed Woods stepped in front of a pass in the flat.

Bryce Harper says he'll be fine for October, that the elbow and wrist injuries the two-time NL MVP has played through this Philadelphia Phillies season are more a nuisance than a concern for the postseason. Harper's pop has been down this month, about as noticeable as the black support sleeve he wears on his right arm. Harper says he's battled wrist problems since May while the elbow is a more recent issue. The 31-year-old Harper is in his first full season playing first base after reconstructive elbow surgery forced him to move from right field.

Taijuan Walker keeps the faith he can return to Philadelphia's rotation. Winless since early May and with a 6.50 ERA on the season, Walker knows a spot in the starting rotation won't happen this year. The Phillies gave Walker the hook this week and demoted him to the bullpen. The Phillies hope the move can help the right-hander fix issues with velocity and command that spoiled his season. The Phillies have essentially turned Walker into a mop-up reliever down the stretch as they chase an NL East title. The Phillies have lost his last nine starts.

This latest version of the Colorado Buffaloes looks an awful lot like the last one. The run game remains stagnant. The revamped offensive line allowed pressure and the defense has some shoring up to do. But their stars remain their stars. Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter looked every bit like Heisman hopefuls and potential top picks in the NFL draft as they propelled the Buffaloes to a 31-26 win over FCS North Dakota State in the season opener. It's hard to get a read on whether the Buffaloes will be a contender or if this might be a repeat of Deion Sanders' first season when they finished 4-8.

Palace also picked up U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner on loan from Nottingham Forest.

Letsile Tebogo can do just about anything when it comes to sprinting.
